"Where Thought Leads"
One of the most meaningful projects of my college career was CHANGE, my Senior Studio Art Exhibition. Modeled after the campus’s “Where Thought Leads” banners, this visual installation reimagined them through the lens of equity and inclusion. I collaborated closely with BIPOC students and organizations such as the Black Student Alliance, the Organization of Latin American Students, and Wofford Asian and Pacific Islanders. I held intentional conversations, listened to their stories, frustrations, and visions for change. Their voices shaped the foundation of the work, with each banner challenging dominant racial narratives and amplifying stories often left unheard. In addition to the banners, I collaborated with Emma, an art peer, to create signage highlighting past Wofford graduates of color who were trailblazers in their fields. These were designed as visual counterpoints to existing dormitory names; many of which honor former college presidents who were also slave owners. The goal was to present a more honest and inclusive narrative of the college’s history, prompting the community to reflect on who we choose to celebrate. Initially, I considered placing the banners and signage directly across campus in a protest-style intervention. But as a student-athlete, I had to carefully weigh the implications. After consulting with mentors and professors, I chose to present the work through my Capstone exhibition instead. Despite my anxiety about how it might be received, the response was powerful. Visitors shared heartfelt reactions. CHANGE wasn’t just an exhibition; it was a call to conversation. A visual statement that invited others to reconsider legacy, visibility, and the power of narrative. Though it lasted just a week, its impact still resonates, and it remains one of my proudest and most transformative experiences. Art is not just for reflection - it’s a tool for truth-telling, healing, and CHANGE.
